A Greek-rite Catholic visitors’ centre is to be built in Attila square
The Diocese of Hajdúdorog and the municipality of Debrecen are having a new visitors’ centre built in Attila square. The foundation stone of the 360 square-metre floorspace building was laid down by his eminence, Metropolita Fülöp Kocsis and Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen on May 23, 2019.
It was in 1910 that – as a result of the joint effort of the Borough of Debrecen, the Greek-rite Catholic Church and the state of Hungary -, a remarkable building in that sector of Debrecen, the church dedicated to the „patronage of the Virgin Mother” was built. It is possible for the touristical visitors’ centre to be built on the vacant plot next to this church, which will equally assist in learning about the history of Greek-rite Catholics in Debrecen and facilitate the congregation’s gatherings. On the ground-floor of the two-story building, a touristacal exhibition space is to be found also as the focal point of the building. Also on the ground floor can one find the offices administering and serving the activities taking place in the centre besides the block of sanitation rooms. There will be a larger open space upstairs besides the engineering rooms. The inner courtyard will facilitate parking and provide a small-size playground for children.
