A new epoch opens in education in Debrecen
A ceremonial school-year opening inaugurated the Debrecen International School on August 30, 2019. Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, put it in this way at the event: A new epoch opens in education in Debrecen.
In 2015, the Borough of Debrecen concluded an agreement with the Government of Hungary to carry out the Programme of Modern cities. An item in it was the establishment of the Debrecen International School. Construction work began in the summer of 2018 and by taking advantage of the 3.8 billion HUF subsidy of the Modern Cities Programme, it got accomplished in just one year. The Debrecen International School has some special internal features: on the basement level there is a gymnasium awaiting the pupils, classrooms and a refectory can be found on the ground floor including the kitchen and two music rooms (a small one and a big one) plus two rehearsal rooms and an auditorium to take 240 persons. There are 39 octagonal rooms to be found on the first floor, 37 of which function as classrooms. It is on the same level as a 620 sq. metre sports field which offered space for the school opening and inauguration event. Also part of the school is an artificial-turf football pitch surrounded by a four-lane running track.
In the school year of 2019/2020 56 pre-schoolers started schooling in the institution and - in a rising grades system – will reach the total school population of 500 pupils.
