Debrecen is the natural centre of the eastern part of Hungary
The new General Assembly of the Municipality of Debrecen had its inaugural session on 24 October 2019. The city’s managing board expanded, as a fourth vice-mayoral office was added to the previous three, and a counsellor for coordinating relations between the educational institutions of Debrecen was also appointed by the General Assembly.
Mayor Dr. László Papp, who has started his second cycle as mayor, said in his speech delivered at the session: each decision the General Assembly makes – directly or indirectly – influences the lives of more than 200 thousand people. Furthermore, its regulations may have an impact on the region’s population of a million in several cases. Thus, members of the General Assembly work and take responsibility for not only the citizens of Debrecen but that of the wider region. With regard to the above, we can state that Debrecen’s weight and importance have changed significantly in recent years in the areas of the economy, education, culture as well as traffic: it has become the most significant city in the region. It is not only one among the country’s settlements, but has an outstanding role among major cities.
