Jubilee festival of pottery in Debrecen
It is the tenth time the International Festival of Pottery has been organized in Kossuth square in Debrecen between May 17-18, 2018.
This year there were 26 exhibitors who presented and offered their creations for sale: plates, keepsake pieces were on show for the public. The centuries old handicraft tradition is important for Debrecen, for there had been potters mentioned in sources since the16th century. The festival was opened in ceremonial circumstances by Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, who handed over diplomas to participating handicraftsmen present at the opening. Mayor Papp pointed out in his complimentary address that handicraftsmanship constitutes an organic element in the history of the city. Potters in Debrecen also had a role in making Debrecen known in remote parts and their world of motifs became dominant in overall Hungarian folk-art.
’’One major thread in the texture of our competitive application for the title of ’’Cultural Capital of Europe, 2023” is linked to Debrecen’s handicraftsmanship”.
’’The overall brand-name given to Debrecen’s application is ’’Handbook for the Future”, which relies in good part on those traditions in handicraftsmenship that are organically related to the city’s history” saic Mr. László Papp mayor of Debrecen.
