Let us be proud of what our forebears did for our country!
„Straws in the wind – let us remember our military heroes” was the title of an event where mostly secondary school students commemorated the revolution of 1848. In the Debrecen Millitarium – Military cemetery of heroes on March 14, 2019.
In his address given at the ceremony, Mr. Szabolcs Komolay, deputy mayor of Debrecen, reminded the audience that the place was far more than just a cemetery, and this holiday is also of outstanding significance in the life of the Hungarian nation, for the events of the years 1848-49 left a lasting print in the nation’s soul. For us, Debrecen citizens this cemetery is a place of great moment because our city played a remarkable role at the time of the freedom-fight: Debrecen was capital city from January to May, 1849. Subsequent to the commemorative speech a cultural programme was given by the students of the Károly Kratochvil Secondary Military School, then the participants laid wreaths and flowers at the monument of the heroes of the August 2, 1849, battle of Debrecen. The commemoration was accompanied by the Zoltán Kodály Youth Wind-band.
