New Year’s concert in the Nagytemplom (Big Church)
Solemnly uplifting was the concert given by the Kodály Philharmony in the Nagytemplom (Big Church) filled to capacity on January 01, 2019. Prior to the musical event that has already become traditional, Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen and Right Reverend Károly Fekete, bishop of the Reformed Church district addressed the audience.
Mayor Mr. László Papp announced that a series of events are to take place in 2019 titled: ’’Debrecen – the Capital of Independence” commemorating the events that had taken place in the year 1849, that is, when Debrecen became temporarily the capital of Hungary 170 years ago. The Hungaran National Assembly (Parliament) moved to Debrecen together with the National Defence Commission led by Lajos Kossuth and the Holy Royal Crown of Hungary was also guarded here during this interim period. Among other things mayor Mr. László Papp declared in his new year’s speech that 2018 had truly been the year of Debrecen’s own. The unfolding events in the old year charted the course of development for the city of Debrecen in the coming decades, which also holds out hopes of her citizens’ growth in wealth and also of achieving a stage when a larger number of Debrecen youths can aspire to build their future in Debrecen. Debrecen is already on the threshold of the ’’club” of the most successful cities in Europe and will certainly pass it.
