Several hundred children danced in the „Calling on the neighbours” festival in Debrecen
The 22nd „Calling on the Neighbours” children and youth folk-dance festival of the Carpathian Basin took place in Debrecen between May 30 and June 02, 2019.
This high-ranking event was a worthy closing of the jubilee series of events titled „Debrecen, the capital of Freedom” that was held in commemoration of the fact that Debrecen was capital of the country for half a year 170 years ago, in1849. The events of the festival to take place on May 31 and June 01 were announced at a preliminary press-release by Mr. Szabolcs Komolay, mayor of Debrecen, and Ms. Zsuzsa Tiszai, head of the Hajdú Dance Ensemble of Debrecen on May 29, 2019. The objective of this event is to give local and visiting children delightful experience besides presenting the high-quality traditionalist activity and by means of the playhouse programmes. This year, organizers have invited participants not only from our own country but also from Hungarian settlement areas in the Carpathian Basin, as well as from Sumen (Bulgaria), one of the twin-cities of Debrecen which settlement had happened to be the location of the first prolonged stay of Lajos Kossuth’s exile following the defeat of the Hungarian War of Independence in 1849. Altogether about 700 dancers participated in the event.
