The Blessed Virgin Exhibition in Kölcsey Centre opened
55 contemporary creative artists present the tradition of the relationship between the Blessed Virgin and the Hungarian nation through their own artistic means. The exhibition was the opening event of the series of programmes in the Carnival Week. The Blessed Virgin is rendered in paintings, graphics, small sculpture or in textile pictures. Never before had it been possible to appeal to 55 artists to work on creations about the same, common theme.
Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen said at the opening of the exhibition: The most important message of the carnival Week, and the Flower Carnival is community cohesiveness. While the Blessed Virgin Exhibition suggests to the visitors that we are Hungarians united and a Saint looks after us.
We no longer live within the same borders as did those living at the time of King Saint Stephen of Hungary, but this dos not mean that Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin and the Hungarians living within the same borders King Saint Stephen set do not belong together and bear no responsibility for each other. – said mayor Mr. László Papp.
