The strategic cooperation of Debrecen and Wizz-Air to be broadened
The Borough of Debrecen and the air-carrier company Wizz-Air are bent on broadening their strategic cooperation. Among other things, a new runway is to be built and the capacity of the Airport is to be enhanced in order to cater for an increased passenger traffic – as was announced jointly by the leaders of the city and the company respectively at the Old City Hall on June 17, 2019.
Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, pointed out that the unused strip next to the present runway is to be demolished and a completely new 45 metre-wide runway is going to be built complete with an up-to-date ILS 3 instrument-assisted landing system. The CEO of Wizz-Air added: the construction of the new runway facilitates cooperation in other areas, too, apart from increasing the number of flights and destinations. Mr. József Váradi offered the example of locating their plane-maintenance base in Debrecen, as well as starting pilot-training and aviation engineering. He also announced: Wizz-Air is intending to send a flight to Wales for the sake of the supporters of the Hungarian National Eleven so that they can see the soccer match against the Welsh National eleven there.
