We join forces with the local Jewish community in building up Debrecen
With the participation of the representatives of sister-parishes of Izraelites from beyond the borders talks were held by the Debrecen Israelite Parish for the 20th time between Sept 05 and 07, 2019. The subject matter of the conference was the cultural and religious heritage of Jewish communities from the viewpoint of tourism.
Mr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, said in his complimentary speech made on Sept 19, that the endeavours of the Debrecen Israelite Parish taking shape over so many years fall in line with and coincides with the intentions of the Borough of Debrecen, that is, the goal of making our city the economic cultural, educational and, at the same time, spirituial centre of the region. Debrecen has achieved this role by means of innovative changes, although it was not easy, but to hold on to it and fulfil that role is even more difficult. I strongly believe that in the coming years the regional weight of our borough will grow in significance – in cooperation with the Jewish community even further. It was in the past 5 years that the buildings of the Jewish community have been upgraded and have by now become the attractive spectacles of the Jewish quarter of town, and decisive relics of the religious history of our town. A memorial wall was erected in 2015, which immortalizes the memory of every Jewish victim of the horrors of the Holocaust. These edifices including the memorial wall are visited by innumerable visitors form wthin the county as well as from abroad. Debrecen is committed to securing the playing field to all in achieving their ambitions in life regardless of origin, gender, age or religious background – emphasized the mayor of Debrecen.
